Korea is a short hop from Xiamen but a demanding market to sell into, because the labelling requirement is in Korean, the children’s wear safety regime is one of the strictest in Asia, and the buying culture sits between the Japanese and the European models. Unitex Underwear (Xiamen Unitex Trade Co., Ltd.) is a China-based underwear supplier working through long-term BSCI-audited partner factories in the Fujian knitwear corridor — men’s, women’s and kids’ knitted underwear, MOQ 2,000 pcs per style and colour, FOB Xiamen.
The Seoul Buyer Base, and What It Asks For
Korean underwear retail is concentrated. A small number of large apparel groups, department-store operators, home-shopping channels and a fast-moving online sector account for most of the volume, supported by general trading companies that handle import programmes for several of them. The buyer who writes a brief from Seoul is usually an experienced importer with an established compliance team, and the questions come in a familiar order: labelling, safety certification, delivery window, and then price.
Korean buyers also work to a faster trend cycle than European ones. The market responds quickly to colour and fabric trends, and a programme that cannot turn a new colourway in a reasonable window loses its place in the range. That favours the reorder model: a first order on two or three styles, then a series of smaller, faster top-ups as colour and print options rotate. Because the sea leg from Xiamen to Busan is short and the air link is direct, that model is workable here in a way it is not for a Brazilian or Canadian buyer.
A third characteristic is the emphasis on presentation. Korean retail is visually driven and packaging standards are high: individual polybagging, size and colour labelling that scans correctly, and cartons that arrive presentable. Underwear packed for a European wholesale account may not meet what a Korean retail account expects, so packing specification belongs in the brief rather than in a follow-up email.
Xiamen to Seoul: Short Sea, Short Air, Busan and Incheon
Container services from Xiamen into Busan run in the region of four to seven days port to port, with Busan being one of the largest container ports in the world and a major transhipment hub for the region. Door to door into the Seoul metropolitan area — via Busan with an inland leg, or via the port of Incheon which sits much closer to the capital — allow roughly ten to fifteen days. Incheon is often the better choice for Seoul delivery simply because of distance; Busan wins when the service frequency or the rate makes it the cheaper option, so it is worth comparing the two rather than defaulting to either.
Air freight is direct and short. Xiamen to Incheon is around two hours of flying time with several daily services, so air cargo lands in one to two days airport to airport with door-to-door delivery inside three or four days. For a colourway top-up or a sample set that has to be in a meeting, it is a realistic tool rather than an emergency measure, and the cost gap to sea freight is smaller on a short route than on a transpacific one.
One documentation note worth building in: Korean import clearance requires the importer’s registration with Korean customs and, for goods subject to the safety regime, the relevant certification reference. A Korean-established importer or a customs representative is needed, so as with Japan the local entity question should be settled before the first order rather than at the port.
Korean Labelling, KC Safety Confirmation, and the Duty Position
Textile products sold in Korea must carry a label in Korean. The content follows the quality labelling framework for textiles: the fibre composition by generic name and percentage, the size, the care instructions in the standard symbol form, the manufacturer or importer, and the country of origin. The requirement that matters most in practice is that the information be in Korean — an English-only label does not satisfy it — and that the label be attached to the product. Korean authorities also enforce the country-of-origin marking separately, and origin labelling for imported goods is treated as a consumer protection matter rather than only a customs one.
Children’s and infants’ clothing attracts an additional regime. Apparel for young children requires safety confirmation under the Korean certification system, generally referred to as KC confirmation, which is issued against a testing regime rather than self-declared. The tests typically cover formaldehyde content, the presence of restricted azo dyes from the banned list, pH value, and colour fastness, with thresholds set at levels comparable to or stricter than the European equivalents. The practical consequences for a programme are two. First, the testing has to be done on the actual fabric and the actual colourways — a general material certificate is not a substitute — and second, it has to be done before shipment, because the certificate is part of the import file. If your Korean range includes children’s sizes, plan several weeks for this rather than assuming it fits inside the normal sampling window.
On cost, Korea applies an Most-Favoured-Nation rate for knitted apparel that sits in the region of thirteen percent, with value-added tax at ten percent on the duty-paid value. Two preferential routes exist and both are worth checking for your product: the China–Korea free trade agreement and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which allow reduced or staged rates against a valid certificate of origin. Which one applies, and at what rate for your specific subheading, depends on the product and the year of the tariff staging, so confirm it with your Korean broker against the current schedule. It is a genuine cost lever — the gap between the general rate and a preferential rate is large enough to change which programme is viable.
What We Do, and What We Do Not Do
Unitex is a sourcing and supply-chain management company and owns no production facilities. We develop styles, source fabric and trims, place orders with long-term partner factories in the Xiamen–Quanzhou–Jinjiang corridor, and run production follow-up, AQL 2.5 inline and final inspection and export documentation. Compliance evidence is amfori BSCI at the partner sites and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for the materials on your order, with certificate numbers shared at quotation.
For a Korean programme we can offer the material and production-side evidence that supports KC testing — fabric and colourway samples for the laboratory, and the mill documentation behind them — but the safety confirmation itself is issued against the importer’s application, and the Korean label has to be applied with the importer’s details. What we do is sew the Korean-language label your importer’s artwork requires at production, so the goods arrive ready rather than needing local re-labelling. We are not a Korean certification body, not your importer of record, and we do not claim any certification we do not hold.

Buyer checklist
- Settle which Korean entity is the importer before label artwork, because the Korean label carries the importer's details.
- Build the Korean-language label variant at sampling — an English-only label does not meet the requirement.
- If the range includes children's sizes, book the KC safety testing early, on the actual fabric and every colourway.
- Check whether the China–Korea free trade agreement or RCEP gives the better rate for your subheading and arrange the certificate of origin.
- Compare Incheon against Busan on total landed cost to the Seoul metropolitan area rather than on the ocean rate alone.
- Specify the retail packing — polybagging, size and colour labelling, carton presentation — in the brief, not afterwards.
