Türkiye is an unusual market for a Chinese supplier because it is both a consumer market and a competitor: it has a large domestic knitwear and underwear industry, and Turkish brands and retailers buy from China mainly for the ranges their own industry cannot supply competitively — basic cotton programmes at volume, entry price points, and private-label lines where the unit economics do not work on domestic production. Unitex Underwear (Xiamen Unitex Trade Co., Ltd.) is a China-based underwear supplier working through long-term BSCI-audited partner factories in the Fujian knitwear corridor — men’s, women’s and kids’ knitted underwear, MOQ 2,000 pcs per style and colour, FOB Xiamen.
The Istanbul Buyer Base, and What It Asks For
There are really two buyer types in Istanbul, and they behave differently. The first is the domestic brand or retailer buying for the Turkish consumer, typically through a production office staffed by people who know knitwear from the inside. This buyer will assess a sample against a domestic standard, because they know what a Turkish mill can produce and they are buying from China only where the price-to-quality trade-off is favourable. The second is the exporter — a Turkish company buying from China and shipping to third markets, often to the Middle East, North Africa or the CIS — for whom Istanbul is a re-export platform rather than a destination.
The second model has a consequence that is easy to miss. Türkiye is in a customs union with the European Union for industrial goods, but a garment imported into Türkiye from China and then re-exported does not carry Turkish origin, and it does not automatically gain access to the European Union on the terms a Turkish-made product would. Whether the goods qualify for a preferential rate somewhere else depends on their origin, not on the country they shipped from, so a re-export programme has to be planned around which markets will accept Chinese-origin goods at what rate. For a Turkish exporter already used to this, it is second nature; for a first-time buyer it is worth mapping before the order rather than after.
The first buyer type brings a different set of expectations: shorter runs are harder to justify against domestic supply, so trial orders matter, and the sampling stage often becomes the commercial test. Where a Turkish buyer can be persuaded to move a basic programme to China, it is usually because the fabric specification and the fit are right and the delivery is dependable — not because the unit price is the lowest on offer.
Xiamen to Istanbul: Sea to Ambarli or Mersin, and the Rail Route
Istanbul is served by the Ambarli container terminal on the Marmara coast, with Mersin, Izmir and Gemlik handling other Turkish demand. Sea transit from Xiamen runs in the region of twenty-five to thirty-five days port to port on a service transiting the Suez Canal, and door to door into Istanbul plan on about thirty-five to forty-five days. Because the Suez route is the natural one, Red Sea security conditions affect this lane directly: when carriers divert around the Cape of Good Hope instead, add roughly ten to fifteen days to the transit, and treat that as a realistic possibility on any shipment with a fixed deadline rather than a remote risk.
Rail is an established alternative into Türkiye. The China–Europe corridor runs through Central Asia, across the Caspian or through Russia, and on into Türkiye via the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars route, with station-to-station timings that undercut the sea transit substantially. For a programme with a fashion deadline it is worth pricing, and it has the advantage of avoiding the Red Sea entirely, which is why its use has grown. The route is longer in kilometres than the Malaszewicze corridor into Poland and involves more than one border crossing, so it is less consistent — but as a second option alongside sea it has real value.
Air freight lands at Istanbul Airport, with Xiamen to Istanbul normally a one-stop routing of two to four days airport to airport. For samples and urgent replenishment it is straightforward, and the frequency of connections through the Gulf and Istanbul makes it more flexible than the distances would suggest.
Turkish Labelling, Conformity, Duty and VAT
Türkiye requires textile products sold to consumers to carry a label in Turkish. The content follows the pattern now familiar across most major markets: the fibre composition by generic name and percentage, the country of origin, the care instructions in standard symbol form, and the identity of the manufacturer or the importer. The Turkish language obligation is the element that catches suppliers who assume a European label will travel, and it applies to imported goods as well as domestic ones.
Alongside labelling, Türkiye operates a conformity assessment regime for textile products. The importer is expected to hold a declaration of conformity for the product, supported by test evidence, and above a value threshold per model or style the regime moves from a declaration to third-party verification — in practice a type test and certificate issued by an accredited laboratory against the Turkish textile standard, at a cost per style that a buyer should budget for rather than treat as incidental. The tests cover the parameters that matter on skin-contact textiles: fibre composition accuracy, dimensional stability, colour fastness, pH value and restricted substances including azo dyes and formaldehyde. For a programme with several styles, the per-style cost of this testing is a real line in the budget, and it is a reason a Turkish buyer consolidates its range into fewer styles rather than many.
On cost, Türkiye’s position is distinctive because of the customs union. Goods of European Union origin enter Türkiye without customs duty, but that preference does not extend to Chinese-origin goods, which are assessed at the applicable rate — for much of the apparel range a moderate rate in the region of six to seven percent, with certain categories carrying additional or safeguard measures that should be checked against the current schedule. Value-added tax applies on top, at a reduced rate for clothing rather than the full standard rate, and it is recoverable by a registered importer. Because both the duty position and the conformity thresholds change, and Türkiye has periodically applied additional duties to specific product categories, the practical approach is to confirm the treatment for your specific commodity code with your Turkish broker before pricing a range, and to ask us for the fibre composition and testing documentation the conformity file will need.
What We Do, and What We Do Not Do
Unitex is a sourcing and supply-chain management company and owns no production facilities. We develop styles, source fabric and trims, place orders with long-term partner factories in the Xiamen–Quanzhou–Jinjiang corridor, and run production follow-up, AQL 2.5 inline and final inspection and export documentation. Compliance evidence is amfori BSCI at the partner sites and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for the materials on your order, with certificate numbers shared at quotation.
For a Turkish programme the useful things we can do are supply the fibre composition and construction data the conformity file requires, provide fabric and colourway samples for the accredited laboratory, sew the Turkish-language label your importer’s artwork specifies, and hold the specification discipline that a market with this much domestic production experience expects. What we are not is a Turkish conformity assessment body, your importer of record, or the holder of the declaration of conformity — those follow the importing entity. And we state only what we can evidence — amfori BSCI social audits and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 at the partner sites; anything else a retail supplier code requires is confirmed per order.

Buyer checklist
- Build the Turkish-language label variant at sampling — a European label does not satisfy the Turkish language obligation.
- Budget the per-style third-party test cost if your order exceeds the declaration threshold, and consolidate the range accordingly.
- Confirm the current duty and any additional or safeguard measures for your commodity code with your Turkish broker.
- Check the origin position for any goods you intend to re-export from Türkiye, because the customs union preference follows origin.
- Weather-proof the delivery date against a Red Sea diversion of ten to fifteen days on the sea route.
- Ask for the fibre composition and construction data your conformity file needs, rather than a general material declaration.
