Catalonia has one of the densest apparel retail and wholesale networks in southern Europe, and a Barcelona buyer usually needs to satisfy two regimes at once: the EU rules that apply across the Union, and the Spanish national rules that sit on top of them. The Barcelona Buyer Base, and What It Asks For

Barcelona sits inside a cluster that includes textile wholesaling in Badalona and Mataró, mid-market retail chains, and a large population of independent boutiques and online sellers selling across Spain and into France and Italy. Two features shape the brief. First, a Spanish-language label is mandatory, and it has to carry the importer’s fiscal identification number, so the label artwork depends on which entity in your group is importing. Second, many Barcelona buyers also serve Latin American markets where the same Spanish-language label works, which makes one label variant serve two destinations — a genuine cost saving that is easy to capture if the artwork is planned before production rather than after.

Catalan is a second official language in the region rather than a replacement for Spanish on the label, and adding it is a marketing decision rather than a compliance one. If you sell through Catalan-language retail, we can sew bilingual labels; if the goods leave Spain for Latin America, Spanish alone is what the destination requires.

Xiamen to Barcelona: Sea First, Air as the Backup

There is no direct flight between Xiamen and Barcelona. The practical air routing is a one-stop service through Paris CDG — Xiamen–Paris is a direct Xiamen Airlines flight of roughly twelve hours fifty minutes — or through Amsterdam, Doha or Istanbul. Total airport-to-airport time lands between sixteen and twenty-four hours depending on the connection.

Almost all volume moves by sea. Services from central and south China into Valencia and Barcelona run about 25 to 35 days port to port, with Barcelona the Catalan gateway and Valencia the largest container port in the country and the better choice for onward distribution into central Spain. From Xiamen, plan on roughly 30 to 35 days to Barcelona and a little over thirty to Valencia on a direct main-line service; transshipment adds several days. Door-to-door, including clearance and inland delivery, 40 to 50 days is a realistic figure.

Two cost items are worth putting in the landed-cost model from the start. The EU Emissions Trading System surcharge now appears as a separate line on Asia–North Europe and Mediterranean invoices following full implementation in 2026, averaging around 168 US dollars per dry forty-foot container on the routes where it is itemised. And Spanish inland haulage varies enough between Valencia and Barcelona that choosing the cheaper port without checking the trucking cost can cost more than the freight saving.

Spanish Labelling, Duty and VAT

Fibre composition follows EU Regulation 1007/2011: the generic names of the constituent fibres with their percentages by weight in descending order, on a durable and legible label. Article 16(3) of the Regulation allows each member state to require its own official language, and Spain does — Real Decreto 928/1987 requires the label information to appear at least in Spanish. The same decree goes further than the EU baseline in two respects that matter to an importer: it requires the importer’s fiscal identification number on labels for textiles imported and distributed in Spain, and it requires a mark of origin. Labels must be sewn in or permanently attached, not supplied as a loose tag.

Duty on knitted and woven apparel from China is generally in the region of twelve percent under the common external tariff, and Spanish VAT is twenty-one percent on the duty-paid value, recoverable by a VAT-registered importer. Note that the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla sit outside the Spanish VAT territory and are treated separately, so a shipment to Las Palmas is not simply a shipment to Barcelona with a different address.

Since December 2024 the General Product Safety Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2023/988, requires an EU-established responsible economic operator to be identified on the product or its packaging, and requires a technical file. For a Barcelona buyer importing directly that operator is usually your own Spanish company; if you are buying for resale elsewhere in the Union, decide who carries that role before the goods ship.
