Australia is one of the easier markets to import apparel into, and Sydney is the market where most of it lands. Duty is often zero under the China–Australia free trade agreement, labelling requirements are clear, and the sea route from Xiamen is one of the shortest on our network. The thing to get right is the label: Australia enforces it actively and a misdescribed garment is unsaleable. Unitex Underwear (Xiamen Unitex Trade Co., Ltd.) is a China-based underwear supplier working through long-term BSCI-audited partner factories in the Fujian knitwear corridor — men’s, women’s and kids’ knitted underwear, MOQ 2,000 pcs per style and colour, FOB Xiamen.
Why Australia Is an Easier Market — and Where It Is Not
Australian apparel importing is comparatively simple. The general duty rate on most clothing is around five percent, and under ChAFTA most chapter 61 and 62 garments of Chinese origin enter at zero against a valid certificate of origin. Goods and services tax applies at ten percent on the duty-paid value including transport and insurance. There is no import licensing regime for ordinary apparel and no quota.
The complication is labelling and product safety, which Australian regulators enforce through general consumer law rather than through a customs gate. A fibre content claim has to be accurate because a misdescribed blend is a misleading representation, and country-of-origin claims are policed — describing a Chinese-made garment as made in Australia is a breach. Care labelling is a commercial expectation for general apparel but becomes a mandatory standard for made-up textiles, and children’s nightwear carries a mandatory flammability standard with dimensional requirements for low-fire-hazard designs. The importer, as the responsible supplier, carries the liability, so it is worth getting the label right at production.
One practical point: labels produced to Chinese domestic standards do not satisfy Australian requirements and have to be replaced or supplemented before retail sale. That is a straightforward change when it happens at the factory, and an expensive one when it happens in a Sydney warehouse.
Xiamen to Sydney: The Shortest Route on Our Network
Xiamen Airlines operates direct daily services between Xiamen and Sydney, along with a direct service to Melbourne. That gives Australia one of the few daily direct passenger links from Xiamen on our overseas list, and it makes a factory visit genuinely routine. Air cargo on the same route is fast, and door-to-door air freight is typically four to six days.
Sea freight is where the advantage really shows. Xiamen sits on the south-east coast, closer to Australia than Shanghai or Ningbo, and services into Port Botany run around nine to twelve days port to port — materially shorter than the thirty-plus days to Europe or the East Coast of the United States. Door to door to a Sydney warehouse, including export clearance, Australian clearance and drayage, plan fifteen to twenty-five days.
That short transit changes what a programme can do. It makes a genuine in-season top-up possible, it reduces the working capital tied up in transit, and it means a reorder on a proven style can reach a Sydney shelf in well under two months from the reorder date — provided the production slot is available, which is why the 45 to 60 day bulk lead time rather than the sailing time is what usually sets the calendar.
Australian Labelling, Origin and Biosecurity
Australian labelling has three elements to get right. Fibre content has to state the percentage of each fibre component, with every component at five percent or more listed, in English and permanently attached. A country-of-origin claim must be accurate and substantiated. Care instructions should follow the AS/NZS 1957 framework, which becomes a mandatory standard for made-up textiles and is a commercial expectation for garments.
Country of origin for the customs claim is a separate question from the label claim, and ChAFTA has its own rules of origin. The certificate of origin for a ChAFTA claim has to be issued by an authorised Chinese body and obtained before the goods are exported — it cannot be obtained retrospectively, which means a missed certificate is a five percent duty cost that cannot be recovered.
Biosecurity is the last item and the one most often overlooked. Wooden packaging requires ISPM 15 treatment and marking, and shipments with natural-fibre packing such as jute, hessian or straw, or with visible contamination, will attract Australian biosecurity attention. The simple answer is to specify synthetic wrapping and treated pallets in the packing instruction, keep the cargo clean, and avoid a biosecurity hold on a shipment that is otherwise perfectly compliant.
What We Do, and What We Do Not Do
Unitex is a sourcing and supply-chain management company working with long-term partner factories in the Fujian knitwear corridor. We handle development, fabric and trim sourcing, order placement, production follow-up, AQL 2.5 inline and final inspection, and export documentation, and we produce the Australian label variant — English, fibre percentages, origin statement and care content — at production. We do not own factories. Our compliance evidence is amfori BSCI audits at the partner sites and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification for the materials on your order, with certificate numbers shared at quotation.
We do not act as your Australian importer of record, do not hold stock in Sydney, and do not issue the ChAFTA certificate of origin ourselves — that is issued by an authorised Chinese body and we arrange it as part of the export documentation. Goods ship from Xiamen Port on FOB terms, or CIF, CNF or DDP if you prefer.

Buyer checklist
- Request the ChAFTA certificate of origin before the goods leave China — it cannot be issued retrospectively.
- Replace or supplement any Chinese-standard label with an English-language Australian variant at production.
- List every fibre component at 5% or more, and verify the origin claim against the actual processing location.
- Check whether your product is children's nightwear, which carries a mandatory flammability standard.
- Specify synthetic wrapping and ISPM 15 treated pallets to avoid a biosecurity hold.
- Confirm the freight booking against the 45–60 day bulk lead time, since production rather than sailing usually sets the calendar.
