New Zealand is a small, concentrated market that behaves like a large one in the ways that matter to a supplier: compliance is enforced properly, consumer expectations are high, and the country-of-origin claim carries real legal weight. Auckland is where most of it happens, holding the country’s largest port, its main wholesale and retail trade, and the greater share of apparel importers. Unitex Underwear (Xiamen Unitex Trade Co., Ltd.) is a China-based underwear supplier working through long-term BSCI-audited partner factories in the Fujian knitwear corridor — men’s, women’s and kids’ knitted underwear, MOQ 2,000 pcs per style and colour, FOB Xiamen.
The Auckland Buyer Base, and What It Asks For
New Zealand brand owners — and the two large grocery and general-merchandise retail groups dominate the shelf space — sit at the centre of the apparel trade, supported by a wholesale layer and a growing online sector. The buying culture is close to the Australian one: pragmatic, specification-driven, and used to dealing with Chinese suppliers directly rather than through agents. Relations are typically long-standing, and a New Zealand buyer will often prefer a smaller supplier with a good record over a larger one with a lower price.
Two things distinguish the brief. The first is that New Zealand is genuinely seasonal in the opposite direction to the northern hemisphere — summer falls in December and February — so a production calendar built for Europe will be six months out. A New Zealand buyer plans a winter thermals and baselayers programme at the same moment a European buyer is planning summer cotton, and a supplier who can hold both calendars at once has an advantage.
The second is the weight given to origin and to claims. New Zealand’s fair trading and consumer guarantee framework makes a country-of-origin claim a legal statement, and a made-in claim for goods merely repackaged locally is not permissible. The same applies to any environmental or sustainability claim on the packaging: it has to be substantiated. This is a market where the technical accuracy of the label matters commercially, not only at the border.
Xiamen to Auckland: A Short Leg Compared with Europe
New Zealand is a long way from most of the world but not unusually far from Fujian. Sea services from Xiamen to Auckland run in the region of fifteen to twenty-two days port to port, with Tauranga handling a large share of the country’s container traffic as an alternative gateway. Door to door into Auckland, allow roughly twenty-five to thirty-five days including export clearance, New Zealand customs clearance and delivery, and note that port congestion at either gateway can add to that — Auckland’s port has had periods of capacity pressure which have pushed some cargo through Tauranga and on by road or rail.
Air freight lands at Auckland Airport, with Xiamen to Auckland normally a one-stop routing through Singapore, Hong Kong or Australia, of roughly two to four days airport to airport. Given the relatively short sea leg, air freight is less often needed here than in Europe or the Americas — but it remains the right tool for a sample set, and the cost differential is smaller than a buyer used to a European programme would expect.
One planning point that is easy to miss from offshore: New Zealand’s biosecurity rules are strict and apply to packaging as well as to goods. Wood packaging must meet the international phytosanitary standard, and cartons, pallets and dunnage can all be inspected. It is a well-understood requirement on our side, but it is worth confirming that any packaging component your programme adds locally also complies, because biosecurity delays at the border are resolved slowly.
New Zealand Labelling, GST and the Goods Levy
New Zealand does not impose a mandatory fibre-content label in the way the European Union or Canada does, but it does have a care labelling standard — AS/NZS 1957 — and a retailer will expect it to be followed, because the consumer guarantees framework makes the durability of the product a matter of legal obligation on the seller. In practice that means the care instructions should be correct for the fabric rather than generic, and a fibre composition statement, where it appears, has to be accurate because a misleading claim is actionable under the fair trading rules. Country of origin must be declared to customs and any origin claim on the product or packaging has to be true and specific.
On cost, most apparel enters New Zealand with duty at a rate no higher than ten percent, assessed on the free-on-board value, and some categories attract no duty at all depending on the tariff line. Goods and services tax applies at fifteen percent, charged on a base that includes the customs value, the duty, the international freight and the insurance — so, as in South Africa, the tax is charged on the freight as well as on the goods, which makes the freight rate a tax-relevant number rather than a purely logistical one.
Two procedural changes are worth knowing about. First, New Zealand removed the low-value duty and tax exemption that used to apply to consignments below one thousand New Zealand dollars, with effect from November 2024 — so splitting a shipment into small parcels no longer has the tax advantage it once did, and a commercial import is assessed on the same basis regardless of value. Second, from April 2026 a per-consignment goods levy applies to imported consignments, at different rates for air and sea freight, which adds a small fixed cost per shipment and therefore slightly favours consolidating orders rather than shipping frequently in small lots.
For the compliance file, the evidence set that a European buyer would expect is generally appropriate here: material chemical test reports on skin-contact textiles, covering restricted azo dyes and formaldehyde, and our standard amfori BSCI and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 evidence for the partner sites and materials on the order, with certificate numbers shared at quotation.
What We Do, and What We Do Not Do
Unitex is a sourcing and supply-chain management company and owns no production facilities. We develop styles, source fabric and trims, place orders with long-term partner factories in the Xiamen–Quanzhou–Jinjiang corridor, and run production follow-up, AQL 2.5 inline and final inspection and export documentation. We state only what we can evidence — amfori BSCI social audits and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 at the partner sites; anything else a retail supplier code requires is confirmed per order. We describe ourselves as a sourcing and trading company rather than a manufacturer or a factory owner.
For a New Zealand programme the useful things we can add are care labelling set to AS/NZS 1957, accurate composition and origin statements, the chemical test evidence a New Zealand retailer will ask for, and a production calendar built to the southern hemisphere’s seasons rather than the northern one. What we are not is your importer of record, and we cannot help with a made-in-New-Zealand claim — garments cut and sewn in Fujian are goods of China, and the label and the customs declaration have to say so.

Buyer checklist
- Set care labelling to AS/NZS 1957 and make the care instructions correct for the fabric rather than generic.
- Make sure any fibre or origin statement on the garment is accurate — a misleading claim is actionable under the fair trading rules.
- Model GST on the full landed value including freight and insurance, not on the goods value alone.
- Consolidate orders rather than shipping frequently in small lots, given the per-consignment goods levy that applies from April 2026.
- Check that wood packaging meets the international phytosanitary standard before shipment.
- Build the production calendar to southern hemisphere seasons — summer falls in December and February.
