Hamburg is the port through which a large share of German apparel imports enter, and it is also a buying centre in its own right: the city and its surroundings hold the German operations of several large mail-order, online and wholesale groups, and the northern German import tradition is a documentation-first one. Unitex Underwear (Xiamen Unitex Trade Co., Ltd.) is a China-based underwear supplier working through long-term BSCI-audited partner factories in the Fujian knitwear corridor — men’s, women’s and kids’ knitted underwear, MOQ 2,000 pcs per style and colour, FOB Xiamen.
The Hamburg Buyer Base, and What It Asks For
German apparel buying splits between the large vertically integrated retailers, the mail-order and online groups concentrated in the north, and a long tail of wholesale importers who supply independent retail. The common characteristic is that compliance is handled by a real department. A German buyer will typically ask about the audit status of the production site, the chemical documentation on the fabric, the packaging registration, and the label text, before asking about the unit price — and will then expect the answers to be documented rather than asserted.
This is the market where over-claiming on certification costs a supplier the programme. A German compliance team will ask for the certificate and check the scope, the site and the expiry date against the order. We keep our claims narrow for exactly that reason: amfori BSCI at the partner sites, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for the materials on the order, certificate numbers shared at quotation. Where a retailer requires something we do not hold, we say so at the start rather than after a test order.
The other German characteristic is the packaging obligation. Germany operates an extended producer responsibility regime for sales packaging, which means that packaging placed on the German market must be registered through the national packaging register, with a licence taken out for the material through a system operator. For an underwear import this touches the polybags, the cartons and any hangtags — and the registration is the importer’s obligation, not the supplier’s. It is a small cost and a large administrative nuisance if it is discovered late, so it belongs on the checklist from the first order rather than after the first shipment.
Xiamen to Hamburg: Direct Asian Services and the Baltic Alternative
Hamburg is one of the few European ports with genuine direct deep-sea services from China, which is why northern European services call there rather than feeding in from Rotterdam or Antwerp. Sea transit from Xiamen to Hamburg runs in the region of thirty to thirty-eight days port to port on a direct main-line service, with the express products operating weekly on a faster schedule. Door to door into the Hamburg region, including export clearance, German import clearance and inland delivery, allow roughly thirty-five to forty-five days.
Two practical notes. First, Hamburg has been running a terminal modernisation programme, and capacity reductions at times through 2026 have added variability to discharge and gate operations — a reason to build float into a delivery date rather than plan to the median. Second, the peak season from roughly August to October congests the German ports badly, and a container that normally clears in a few days can wait much longer. Pre-clearing documentation while the vessel is still at sea is standard practice on this route and is worth insisting on with your forwarder: it is the cheapest available reduction in door-to-door time during the peak.
The alternative gateway worth pricing is Gdansk in Poland, which is discussed separately in our Warsaw guide. It is now a genuine deep-sea port for Asian services rather than a feeder port, and for cargo destined for eastern or southern Germany the total cost of a Gdansk discharge plus road haulage can be competitive with Hamburg. Compare the two on total landed cost rather than assuming the German port is the right answer simply because the buyer is German.
German Labelling, Import VAT and the Compliance File
The labelling position in Germany follows the European framework: fibre composition under Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011, with generic fibre names and percentages by weight in descending order on a durable and legible label. The additional element is language — the fibre declaration has to be in German for goods sold to German consumers, so the label needs a German variant with the German fibre names. Care labelling follows the international symbol standard, which is language-independent, and the country of origin is declared to customs and must be accurate on any origin claim printed on the product.
On cost: duty on knitted and woven apparel from China is in the region of twelve percent under the common external tariff, and German import VAT is nineteen percent on the duty-paid value. German VAT on imports can be deferred rather than paid at the border where the importer uses the appropriate procedure, which matters to cash flow on a large shipment, and it is recoverable by a registered importer in the normal way. A German EORI number is required to clear the goods. Two further obligations belong in the same conversation: the General Product Safety Regulation, which since December 2024 requires an EU-established responsible economic operator and a technical file, and REACH Annex XVII entry 43, which restricts azo dyes that release listed aromatic amines in skin-contact textiles — the category underwear sits in.
German customs also cross-checks declared values, and a material and unexplained gap between the declared value and the reference data triggers a query that delays clearance. That is not a reason for concern if your invoices are honest, but it is a reason to keep the commercial invoice, the packing list and the freight document consistent with each other — the discrepancies that cause delays are almost always internal inconsistencies rather than a valuation dispute.
What We Do, and What We Do Not Do
Unitex is a sourcing and supply-chain management company and owns no production facilities. We develop styles, source fabric and trims, place orders with long-term partner factories in the Xiamen–Quanzhou–Jinjiang corridor, and run production follow-up, AQL 2.5 inline and final inspection and export documentation. Our compliance evidence is deliberately narrow and verifiable, because this is a market that checks: amfori BSCI audits at the partner sites and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification for the materials on your order, with certificate numbers at quotation so your team can verify scope and expiry directly.
We state only what we can evidence — amfori BSCI social audits and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 at the partner sites; anything else a retail supplier code requires is confirmed per order. We describe ourselves as a sourcing and trading company rather than a manufacturer or a factory owner. What German buyers get from that structure is flexibility: the order can move to the partner line that suits the fabric and the quantity, and the audit and certificate evidence follows the site actually producing the goods. What we cannot do is file your packaging register entry or act as your responsible economic operator — both follow the importing entity.

Buyer checklist
- Build the German label variant with German fibre names before sampling.
- Register your sales packaging through the national packaging register and take out a system licence — this is the importer's obligation.
- Ask for the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificate covering your specific fabric, and check the scope and expiry date rather than accepting a general claim.
- Confirm the EU responsible economic operator and keep the technical file current under the General Product Safety Regulation.
- Instruct your forwarder to pre-clear the documentation while the vessel is at sea, which is the cheapest reduction in door-to-door time during peak season.
- Compare a Gdansk discharge plus road haulage against Hamburg on total landed cost for cargo destined for eastern or southern Germany.
