Hong Kong trading houses buy differently from brand owners. You are usually not building a range for your own label — you are holding a programme together across several customers, several destinations and a delivery window that has no slack. Unitex Underwear (Xiamen Unitex Trade Co., Ltd.) is a China-based underwear supplier that works that way: one counterpart, several long-term BSCI-audited partner factories in Fujian, one measurement chart across the programme. MOQ 2,000 pcs per style and colour, FOB Xiamen.
Hong Kong Trading Houses: One Counterpart, Many Factories
A trading house carries a structural problem that a brand owner does not: the customer changes, and the factory mix has to change with it. One buyer wants a cheaper cotton brief and will accept a coarser fabric; another needs a soft-touch modal blend for a department store and will not. Locking yourself to a single factory means turning work away, or forcing an order onto lines that were never right for it.
Working with a sourcing company solves that structurally rather than case by case. Unitex holds your specification and your QC standard, and places each order with the partner factory whose gauge, fabric relationships and free capacity fit that style, that quantity and that window. Your customer sees one supplier, one measurement chart and one AQL 2.5 standard. Underneath, the production can move without you re-qualifying a new factory each time a buyer changes.
Two things we are deliberately precise about, because they come up in due-diligence conversations. Unitex does not own the factories — they are separate companies running their own lines, and we place, follow up and inspect the orders. And the compliance evidence, the amfori BSCI audit and the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificate, belongs to those sites. We supply the certificate numbers for the sites on your order so your customer can verify them directly.
Re-Export Paperwork and Incoterms That Matter from Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s role as an entrepôt means the shipping documents often matter more than the goods. Two questions decide most of the work. Where is the ultimate destination — because that fixes the conformity documents, the care labelling and the fibre-content declaration. And who is the importer of record — because that fixes the invoice, the packing list and whether the goods need to clear through Hong Kong at all.
On terms, FOB Xiamen is our standard, and for a Hong Kong trading house it usually the cleanest: you control the forwarder, and the ocean leg is straightforward given the container volumes moving between Xiamen and Hong Kong’s ports. CIF, CNF and DDP are quoted on request where your customer wants a landed price. Document-wise we provide the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin, and we build the care label and the fibre declaration to the ultimate destination’s rules rather than Hong Kong’s, because that is where the goods are read.
One detail worth fixing early: country of origin. Goods produced in Fujian carry Chinese origin, and that has to be consistent across the invoice, the certificate of origin, the label and the customs entry. Inconsistency between those four is the most common reason a shipment stalls, and it costs nothing to get right at quotation stage.
Three and a Half Hours: Xiamen to West Kowloon by Rail
The practical advantage of being based in Xiamen is that Hong Kong is not a long trip. Direct high-speed services run from Xiamen (and Xiamen North) to Hong Kong West Kowloon in roughly three and a half hours, with several departures through the day — a comfortable same-day return for a sample review, or a two-day trip that covers the sample room and a production site. A small number of direct flights also connect Xiamen Gaoqi with Hong Kong in about one hour forty-five minutes, which is useful when the day is tight.
For compliance and inspection visits this changes the economics of doing the work properly. A buyer’s QC team based in Hong Kong can be on the line in Jinjiang the next morning rather than delegating entirely. For a first-visit due-diligence trip, the two-day format works best: the sample room and the fabric wall on day one, the queued production site on day two.
Note that the rail leg crosses a border, so immigration sits inside the journey — West Kowloon has the Hong Kong Port Area and Xiamen North is a mainland station. Allow for that in the schedule rather than treating it as a domestic train.
Men’s Underwear Programmes Most Often Built for Hong Kong Buyers
Hong Kong programmes we see most are men’s basics with a quality floor: boxer briefs, trunks and briefs in cotton and cotton-spandex, often with a woven branded waistband and buyer-specific packing for the destination market. The wider range covers women’s underwear, kids’ underwear, plus size to 5XL, thermal lines and sport bras.
Where a programme serves several destinations, tell us the grid up front. The size grading, the labelling and the fibre declaration differ by market, and building one production lot against one market’s rules and then relabelling for another is the kind of shortcut that shows up as a customs problem.

Buyer checklist
- Confirm the ultimate destination market before sampling — it sets the care label and the fibre-content declaration.
- Name the importer of record and check that it matches the entity on the commercial invoice.
- Check that country of origin is consistent across invoice, certificate of origin, label and customs entry.
- Request the BSCI audit and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificate numbers for the specific sites running your order.
- Book the rail leg knowing immigration is inside the journey — allow time at West Kowloon and Xiamen North.
- If one production lot serves several markets, split the size grading and labelling per market rather than relabelling after production.
