Fit & Grading: What Drives Plus Size Quality
Plus size is not a scaled-up size L. Fit issues concentrate at the waistband roll, gusset width and leg opening, so we ask partner factories to work from dedicated plus-size blocks and add wear-tests on the target size, not the sample size. Custom grading rules are locked at the pre-production sample stage.
Waistband engineering carries the category: wider bands, covered elastics and anti-roll stitching keep the waistband flat on larger frames, while gusset width and rise are graded independently of hip width so coverage stays consistent from 2XL to 5XL. Support pouches on men’s styles are engineered for the block, not just widened.
Size-set planning is part of the brief: we agree the size ratio and assortment split per market at order stage, so bulk is packed to your sell-through curve rather than an even spread.
For multipack plus-size programmes we grade every size in the set on its own measurements rather than extrapolating between sizes, and the grading table travels with the order file so reorders stay on the approved block.
Extended sizes are planned as part of the main programme, not a side line: the same fabrics, prints and elastics as the core range run through the plus-size block, so a plus-size collection carries the same look as the rest of the line.
