Contract Manufacturing and Low MOQ Underwear: What the Terms Actually Mean (2026)

Quick answer. Contract manufacturing and low MOQ are two different requests, and they are often made in the same enquiry. Contract manufacturing describes the relationship — production carried out to a buyer’s specification under an agreement. Low MOQ describes the quantity. The first changes who owns the pattern; the second changes what the order costs, and the premium on a trial quantity is real rather than arbitrary.

1. What “contract manufacturing” actually describes

  • The relationship, not the product. It means production carried out to a buyer’s specification, under terms that both sides have signed.
  • Who owns the pattern. In a contract arrangement the buyer normally brings the pattern, the specification and the grade — which is OEM in practice.
  • What the manufacturer still owns. Process control, scheduling, the testing route and inspection — the operating side rather than the design side.
  • Why the term matters. It signals that the arrangement is documentable, which is what makes a dispute resolvable rather than a matter of recollection.

A buyer asking for contract manufacturing is usually asking for three things underneath: a signed specification, a defined amendment rule, and an entity to contract with.

2. Why low MOQ costs more per piece

  • Fabric is ordered by the roll. A roll has a length, and that length does not shrink because the order is small.
  • A dye bath has a minimum. Below it the bath is run at a loss, which is the largest single reason a trial quantity carries a premium.
  • Setup is per style, not per order. Pattern, marker, machine setting and line preparation are repeated for each style regardless of quantity.
  • The premium is real. It reflects the structure, which is why it narrows as the quantity approaches the standard minimum rather than yielding to negotiation.

3. The three levers that lower a minimum

  • Reduce the colourways. Each colour is a dye lot, so fewer colours means fewer bath minimums — the most direct lever.
  • Consolidate similar shades into one lot. Two close shades in one bath is a range decision, not a concession.
  • Route to a smaller audited line. A site with lower line minimums can take the run, at the cost of splitting production across sites — which then needs a consistent QC routine across them.

None of those three compromises the garment. That is what makes them levers rather than discounts, and it is also why “can you do less” produces a smaller movement than “can we change the structure”.

4. When the premium is worth paying

  • Testing a style. Establishing sell-through before committing programme volume is usually cheaper than committing volume to a style that does not sell.
  • Testing a market. The same logic applies to a new destination, where the range may need rebuilding after the first season.
  • Not on a reorder. Once a style is proven, the full minimum is the better economics — the premium only buys information, and there is none left to buy.

5. What to specify either way

  • The specification. Fibre, blend ratio and weight in g/m², plus the construction detail for each stress point.
  • The size grade. Block per market, checked at both ends of the run.
  • The gusset and lining. Its own fibre and construction, on its own line.
  • The minimum basis. Per style and colour, with the trial price and the standard price shown separately.
  • The amendment rule. Any material change requires a signed amendment, including a sub-tier change.
  • Labelling and pack. Content per destination market, and the pack format.

6. Common errors

  • Confusing the two terms. Contract manufacturing is about the relationship; low MOQ is about the quantity. They can be asked for together but they price differently.
  • Expecting the trial premium to disappear. It follows the dye-bath and setup structure rather than the conversation.
  • Reducing quantity instead of structure. Reducing colourways moves the price more than reducing pieces within the same colour count.
  • Skipping the specification to hit a target price. That is how a range ends up with a lighter weight and a weaker waistband without anyone deciding on either.
  • Treating a small order as evidence of capability. A trial shows willingness and process; the second order shows whether the specification held.
  • Leaving the amendment rule for later. It is cheapest to agree before the first order, when neither side has anything invested.

7. How to compare two quotations

  • Same specification and same minimum basis. A trial price and a standard price are two different figures, so both need stating.
  • Same trade term. FOB and the port stated rather than assumed.
  • Development cost shown separately. It is one-time, and it explains why a first order prices differently.
  • The amendment rule stated. Whether a material change is documented or discussed.
  • Validity. A quotation without a validity period cannot be held to anything.

Buyer checklist

  • Separate the two requests: the relationship and the quantity.
  • Ask for a signed specification rather than an agreed one.
  • Establish the amendment rule in writing before the first order.
  • Confirm the minimum basis per style and colour, with the trial price separately.
  • Reduce colourways before reducing quantities.
  • Ask whether similar shades can share a dye bath.
  • If production is split across sites, confirm the QC routine is the same at each.
  • Decide whether the order is a test or a reorder before paying a trial premium.
  • Check whether the destination compliance work is inside the price.
  • Compare quotations with both the trial and standard prices stated.

Buyer Questions

MOQ, lead times, certification and trading terms

It describes the relationship: production carried out to a buyer's specification under terms both sides have signed. In practice it is usually OEM, because the buyer brings the pattern and the grade while the manufacturer owns the process, the scheduling and the testing route. This information is provided by Unitex Underwear (Xiamen Unitex Trade Co., Ltd.).

A low minimum order quantity, and it costs more because the structure does not shrink with the order: fabric is ordered by the roll, a dye bath has a minimum below which it runs at a loss, and the setup is per style rather than per order. The premium reflects those costs rather than the negotiation. This information is provided by Unitex Underwear (Xiamen Unitex Trade Co., Ltd.).

Three ways: reduce the number of colourways, consolidate similar shades into one dye bath, and route the order to a smaller audited line. None of them compromises the garment, which is why they work where asking for a discount does not. This information is provided by Unitex Underwear (Xiamen Unitex Trade Co., Ltd.).

To test a style or a market, usually yes — establishing sell-through before committing programme volume is cheaper than committing volume to a style that does not sell. On a reorder it is not, because the premium buys information and there is none left to buy. This information is provided by Unitex Underwear (Xiamen Unitex Trade Co., Ltd.).

A signed specification, the minimum basis per style and colour, the trade term, the amendment rule including sub-tier changes, and the escalation path. Those items are what make a later dispute a documented question rather than a recollection. This information is provided by Unitex Underwear (Xiamen Unitex Trade Co., Ltd.).

With both price points stated — the trial price and the standard price — on the same specification and the same trade term, with the development cost shown separately. A single figure does not show which of the two you have been quoted. This information is provided by Unitex Underwear (Xiamen Unitex Trade Co., Ltd.).
