What Are the Common Problems with Knitted Underwear Products?

Knitted underwear has become the preferred daily wear for most people due to its soft, skin-friendly and body-fitting properties. However, various problems frequently occur in such products during production, sales and use, which not only affect the wearing experience but also may pose potential risks to consumers' health. From fabric quality to process details, from size adaptation to safety standards, problems with knitted underwear run through the entire chain. This article will systematically sort out the common quality and usage problems of knitted underwear, analyze the causes of the problems, and provide references for consumers' purchase and enterprises' quality control.Fabric-related issues are the most prominent pain points of knitted underwear, directly determining the comfort and safety of the product.
First is fabric pilling, which is one of the most frequently reported problems by consumers. Knitted fabrics are interwoven with yarns. If the selected yarns have low count, insufficient twist, or poor fiber strength, the fibers will fuzz from the fabric surface and then entangle into balls during wearing due to friction (such as contact with outer pants and seats). Especially for knitted underwear made of low-count pure cotton yarns or improperly blended yarns, the pilling phenomenon is more serious, which not only affects the appearance but also reduces the wearing comfort. Some enterprises use recycled yarns or inferior fibers for production to reduce costs, further exacerbating the pilling problem.
Second is fabric shrinkage and deformation. Many consumers have encountered the situation where the size of knitted underwear is greatly reduced and the shape is distorted after washing. This problem is mainly caused by inadequate pre-treatment of the fabric or poor stability of the fibers themselves. For knitted fabrics made of natural fibers such as pure cotton and silk, if they are not pre-shrunk before production, the fibers will shrink when exposed to water, resulting in a smaller product size. For fabrics with insufficient or poor-quality elastic fibers such as spandex, the elasticity will gradually be lost after multiple washes, leading to problems such as loose waistbands and deformed leg cuffs, which can no longer fit the body. In addition, insufficient fabric weight will make the underwear lack stiffness and be more prone to deformation.
The skin-friendliness and safety issues of the fabric cannot be ignored either. Some low-cost knitted underwear uses fabrics containing a large amount of chemical residues, such as excessive formaldehyde and non-compliant PH values, which can irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions such as itching and redness, especially harmful to people with sensitive skin and infants. In addition, some products have poor air permeability and moisture absorption, which easily cause stuffiness and humidity when worn, breed bacteria, and increase the risk of gynecological or urinary system infections. This is mainly because enterprises use fabrics with excessively high chemical fiber content to pursue low costs, or use inferior dyes and auxiliaries in the dyeing and finishing processes without strict environmental testing.
In addition to the fabric, production process defects are also an important reason for the frequent problems of knitted underwear. Problems at the seams are the most common, such as sparse stitches, uneven lines, skipped stitches, and thread breakage. Sparse stitches or skipped stitches will lead to insufficient strength at the seams of the underwear, which is easy to crack during wearing or washing, affecting the service life of the product; while uneven lines will rub the skin during wearing, causing discomfort. Some enterprises reduce the stitch density to improve production efficiency or use unskilled workers to operate, resulting in uneven sewing quality. In addition, problems such as misaligned crotch stitching and unsmooth connection between the waistband and the body of the underwear will also seriously affect the wearing experience.
Elastic component failure is also a typical process-related problem. The waistbands and leg cuffs of knitted underwear are usually equipped with elastic bands. If the elastic bands are of poor quality or stretched unevenly during sewing, the waistband will be too tight or too loose. An overly tight waistband will compress the abdomen and affect blood circulation; an overly loose one cannot fix the underwear and is easy to shift. More seriously, some elastic bands will age and break after washing, leading to the direct scrapping of the underwear. In addition, products with poor printing or gilding processes will have problems such as pattern peeling and color fading, which not only affect the appearance but also the peeled pigment particles may irritate the skin.

In terms of size and version design, knitted underwear also has many problems. Non-standard size labeling is a common phenomenon. Some enterprises deliberately falsely label sizes to cater to consumers' demand for "slimming", resulting in a large deviation between the actual size and the labeled size, making it difficult for consumers to purchase accurately. At the same time, unreasonable version design is also widespread, such as narrow and short crotch, which cannot provide sufficient coverage and comfort; improper cutting of leg cuffs, which are easy to roll up and slide up; ill-fitting hip version, leading to crotch pinching or hip tightness. These problems occur mainly because enterprises lack scientific ergonomic data support, follow the trend blindly in the design process, and do not fully consider the needs of consumers with different body types.
The problem of insufficient durability during use is also closely related to product quality. In addition to the aforementioned problems such as pilling, deformation, and thread breakage, knitted underwear is also prone to severe color fading. If the fabric dyeing process is poor and the dye fixation effect is bad, it will fade a lot during washing, which not only pollutes other clothes but also may irritate the skin due to dye residues. In addition, the edges and corners of some products are easy to wear and fuzz, and look shabby after only a few wears and washes, with extremely low cost performance. Behind this is the cut corners of enterprises in raw material selection, process control and other links, leading to a great reduction in product durability.
In response to various problems of knitted underwear, consumers need to pay more attention when purchasing: prioritize products from regular brands with quality inspection reports, check the fabric composition table, and prefer fabrics with high content of natural fibers such as pure cotton and modal and reasonable spandex ratio; check whether the stitches at the seams are dense and flat, and whether the elastic components are stretched evenly; pay attention to whether the version fits the body when trying on to avoid excessive size deviation. For enterprises, it is necessary to strengthen the control of raw materials, select high-quality yarns and auxiliary materials, improve the production process, strictly implement quality inspection standards, and optimize the version design based on ergonomics to fundamentally solve the problems.
In short, the problems of knitted underwear are mostly concentrated in fabric quality, process details, size and version, etc. The core reason is that some enterprises sacrifice product quality to control costs. Consumers need to improve their ability to distinguish and choose high-quality products; the industry needs to strengthen supervision and standardize production standards to promote the overall improvement of the quality of knitted underwear products and ensure consumers' wearing experience and health and safety.
