Chinese New Year 2027: What Feb 6 Means for Your Apparel Order Timeline

Chinese New Year falls on Saturday, 6 February 2027. Factories in China typically shut for one to three weeks around it, and a full recovery of production capacity takes longer than the holiday itself. If your spring or summer goods need to be on a shelf in April 2027, the working backwards date is not February. It is early December 2026, when your specs and colours have to be locked so fabric and trims can be booked before the break.

This is the calendar we plan against when placing production in China. Below is how the dates actually behave, and a backwards plan you can copy. If you are sourcing underwear specifically, our men's underwear programmes and the wider product range follow the same calendar. Common questions on minimums and lead times are answered in our FAQs.

Why the closure itself is not the main problem

The three weeks of a holiday can be planned around. What disrupts schedules is what happens either side of it.

Capacity books up hard in the six weeks before the break, as every factory tries to clear its order book. Then the workforce disperses. Sewing operators start heading home in mid to late January, and in some cases earlier if the trip is long. A portion of them do not come back to the same factory in the new year, so the first one to two weeks after reopening often goes into re-hiring and retraining a line rather than straight into output. Anyone who expects production to restart at full speed on day one has not stood in a workshop in February.

The practical translation: there is roughly a five-week window around the holiday in which little new cutting happens, even though the official closure is shorter.

The two items that decide your calendar

Fabric and trims sit before cutting, not after, and both run on their own lead time.

  • Fabric: three to five weeks is normal for greige or in-stock qualities, longer where the yarn has to be spun or a dye lot booked. Custom colours add a lab dip approval round.
  • Trims: woven main labels, printed care labels, hangtags, zippers, buttons and elastics are usually two to four weeks. Custom woven labels take the longest of the group. A single late trim can hold an entire cutting table.

This is why the holiday planning conversation should start with the trim list rather than the sewing capacity. Our own sampling and QC process is built around that sequence, and the timeline for each stage is set out there.

Freight is tight on both sides of the break

Container space is contested before the holiday, as everyone tries to clear finished goods, and contested again after it, as the backlog moves at once. Rates move with it. Build a buffer into your inbound plan rather than assuming the sailing you booked in December will hold its schedule.

A worked backwards plan for April 2027 delivery

Starting from 15 April 2027 in your warehouse:

  • Inbound and distribution: mid-April
  • Vessel departs China: mid-March (allow 30–35 days door to door for the US East Coast and more for inland)
  • Ex-factory: late February, post-holiday production
  • Cutting: mid-January, immediately before the break
  • PP sample approved: early January
  • Fabric and trims booked: December 2026
  • Specs locked and order placed: November – early December 2026

If today's date is later than that, the honest options are to accept post-holiday production and a later landing date, to narrow the range (fewer colours, stock fabric) so the order can move faster, or to move the drop to a later balance of season.

What to do if you have already slipped

Three levers, in order of effectiveness. Narrow the range so fabric can be taken from stock and fewer dye lots are needed. Split the order so a first partial shipment covers your best-selling styles. Or use air freight for a sample-level quantity to test the market while the bulk moves by sea.

Adding money rarely fixes a calendar problem at this point, because the constraint is machine time and labour, not price. If the dates no longer work, tell us your target landing date and we will say plainly whether it is achievable.

Frequently asked questions

How long do factories in China actually close for Chinese New Year?

The official holiday is around one week, but most apparel factories stop for one to three weeks. Counting the pre-holiday capacity crunch and the post-holiday ramp-up, the effective loss to a production calendar is closer to four to five weeks.

When should I place a spring order to avoid Chinese New Year delays?

For goods on a shelf in April, specifications and colours should be locked in November or early December. Orders confirmed after mid-January are usually scheduled after the holiday, which means production in late February, shipment in March and arrival in April or later.

Can I pay extra to keep production running through the holiday?

A minority of factories with a mostly local workforce can run skeleton shifts, and overtime is sometimes possible in the last week before the break. For a small brand, planning around the closure is more reliable than paying to avoid it.

Does Chinese New Year affect shipping rates?

Yes. Space tightens before the break as finished goods are cleared, and again afterwards as the backlog moves. Bookings made in December should be treated as provisional.

Does it matter if I buy through a trading company rather than a factory?

The production calendar is the same, because both depend on the same workshops and the same workforce. A trading partner can sometimes move an order between partnered factories, which helps when one line is overloaded, but it cannot create capacity that does not exist.
