Fabric is the largest single cost line in underwear, and the one most often quoted in the wrong unit. Convert between gsm and oz/yd², then estimate the fabric your order will actually consume — including wastage.

• Conversion: 1 oz/yd² = 33.906 gsm. A 160 gsm jersey is about 4.72 oz/yd².
• Typical fabric consumption per piece (knit, average size mix): boxer brief 0.12–0.18 kg, brief 0.09–0.12 kg, trunk 0.14–0.20 kg, sleepwear set 0.45–0.60 kg, sport bra 0.10–0.14 kg.
• Wastage: plan 6–10% for knit underwear (cutting loss, defects, re-cuts). Printed or striped fabric often needs more because of matching.
• Weight and handfeel: under 150 gsm feels light and cool; 150–180 gsm is the everyday commercial range; over 190 gsm gives a substantial hand and better opacity in white.
