Quick answer. Custom boxer briefs normally run on a minimum of 2,000 pieces per style and colour, with trial orders negotiable from around 1,000. Sampling takes 7–10 days on a stock block and 12–18 days for full custom development; bulk production is typically 45–60 days after sample approval. Four decisions carry the garment: the fabric with its weight, the waistband construction, the leg length and the size grade.
1. What “custom” actually covers
Custom boxer briefs are specified on four levels, and buyers often mean different ones when they use the word.
- Private label. A stock construction with your brand on the waistband, label and pack. Fastest route, lowest development cost.
- Custom development. Your own pattern, block and construction, developed from the brief through sampling rounds.
- Custom fabric or treatment. A standard silhouette in a specified fibre, blend, weight or finish.
- Custom pack. A stock garment in your retail format, with the carton and labelling configured for your channel.
Naming which level you are buying is what makes a quotation comparable. Two suppliers can both answer “yes” to custom and mean two different things.
2. The four decisions that carry the garment
- Fabric and weight. Combed cotton in a cotton-rich blend with a small elastane percentage is the volume base; the weight in g/m² decides how it wears and dries. Specify the blend ratio to the percentage rather than naming the fibre.
- Waistband construction. The most visible quality variable and the first component to lose recovery. Specify recovery at low tension rather than hold strength, and confirm whether it is stitched, bonded or knitted in.
- Leg length. The difference between a trunk, a short-leg boxer brief and a standard boxer brief is coverage, and coverage changes the fabric consumption per piece — which reaches the quotation.
- Size grade. EU, US and UK runs are cut to different pattern blocks rather than being one chart relabelled. Confirm the block per market and check the fit at the ends of the run.
3. MOQ and how the arithmetic works
The minimum is set per style and per colour rather than per order, which is why it multiplies faster than most buyers expect.
- Typical level. Around 2,000 pieces per style and colour for custom development.
- Trial quantities. Negotiable from about 1,000 pieces at a per-piece premium, because the setup is not amortised across a normal run.
- Fastest lever. Reduce the number of colourways, which cuts the dye lots directly.
- Second lever. Consolidate similar shades into one dye lot.
- Depth beats breadth. Two styles at full depth tests a market better than four at half.
4. Sampling and lead time
- Stock-block sample. 7–10 days where the construction already exists.
- Full custom development. 12–18 days per round, and most programmes need one to two rounds before the fit is right.
- Bulk production. 45–60 days for a new style, 30–40 days on a repeat, counted from the approved pre-production sample.
- Peak season. August to October adds 10–15 days to the production queue.
The bulk clock starts at sample approval rather than at the enquiry, which is what decides whether a launch date holds. Plan the schedule backwards from the date that cannot move.
5. What to specify in the tech pack
- Silhouette and measurements — rise, leg opening and covered leg length, per size.
- Fabric — fibre, blend ratio and weight in g/m².
- Waistband — construction method, recovery figure and branding method.
- Seams — type and stitch density at the leg opening and waistband.
- Gusset and lining — specified separately from the body fabric.
- Labelling and pack — fibre and care content, size, importer, and the pack format.
- Compliance — the destination market requirements, confirmed at the design stage.
6. Common specification errors
- Specifying “cotton” without a blend ratio or weight. The two figures behind the name are what make a quotation comparable.
- Leaving the waistband to the supplier default. It is where the cheapest saving is taken and the first thing to fail.
- Skirting the fit sample. One or two rounds is the cheapest insurance in the process.
- Ordering too wide too early. Depth in one silhouette outperforms breadth across several.
- Comparing prices across different specifications. A lighter weight or a simpler waistband quotes a different garment, not a cheaper one.
7. How to compare two quotations
Ask every shortlisted supplier for the same written specification, then compare. Four items decide whether the comparison means anything:
- The specification itself — silhouette measurements, fabric with a weight, waistband construction.
- The trade term — FOB and the port, stated rather than assumed.
- The minimum basis — per style and colour, with the trial price shown separately.
- The validity period — a quotation without one cannot be held to anything.
