Rise & Side Width: The Hipster Block
Hipsters sit between briefs and bikinis on rise, so the waistband height and side width are the fit-critical measurements. We grade hipster blocks separately from brief blocks — not as a trimmed brief — to keep the wide-side silhouette consistent across sizes.
Back coverage height is the other fit-critical point: cut too low and the waistband dips at the back, cut too high and the style reads as a brief. We set back rise and side width together on the block and check them on the fitting sample for each size set.
If the line needs a fuller option, the same programme can carry a boyshort-cut variant on shared fabrics and prints — one dye lot, two silhouettes, one order file.
On printed hipsters the wide side panel is the largest visible area of the garment, so we place motifs on the actual side panel at strike-off stage rather than centring them on the front.

Buyer checklist
- Confirm the hipster block is graded separately from the brief block, or the wide-side silhouette will drift at the size extremes.
- Agree waistband height (rise) and side width in writing at the pre-production sample.
- Check back coverage across XS and 5XL, not only at the middle sizes.
- Approve lace waistbands against the body fabric dye lot, since a half-tone mismatch shows first at the waistband.
- If the line is legging-friendly, ask specifically for the bonded seamless hipster option rather than a cut-and-sew hipster.
- Request a graded measurement spec covering the full size run.
